Peridot Lovies 2025 Experimental & Innovation

Imagine putting on a pair of lightweight glasses and instantly seeing adorable virtual creatures pop up in front of you and interact with the world around you.

Picture going for a walk with a friend, and watching your digital pet play with another in the park – or even snuggling up to your leg.

This is now possible through a collaborative effort between Snap Spectacles and Niantic’s Peridot Beyond. This new invention is a whole new way to connect with digital companions, and the world around them.

Developing Peridot Beyond was no simple task. It required imagining a new innovative paradigm for user interactions, and a new way of thinking how these creatures would naturally fit into our real world. How would they exist without obstructing your view? How would you find them if they were no longer in your direct line of sight?

From the early days of Peridot’s development, Niantic knew that the true vision of Peridot could only be achieved on true outdoor-friendly AR glasses, meaning that a partnership with Snap Inc. would be revolutionary for the future of spatial computing. As a result, Niantic leaned into experimentation, and tinkered with game design that could only be experienced with camera-based AR. These learnings were translated into Peridot Beyond which was built in Snap’s Lens Studio. With the help of Spectacles Sync Kit, Peridot Beyond is now a shared multiplayer experience, enabling users to head outdoors, have experiences with the Dots, and experience the real world together.

Thanks to Niantic’s expertise in location-based AR and Snap’s advanced hardware, these virtual Dots understand the real world around us. They can navigate sidewalks, recognise objects, and interact with other Dots in the same space!

Peridot Beyond is Niantic’s first game built specifically for outdoor-friendly augmented reality glasses, and is part of Niantic’s vision for augmented reality: to enable hands-free and heads-up exploration, exercise, and the ability to make connections with people and communities.
